2012.6: 20 sec. 8 Ft Fun/ Bit Scary Swell Day in Half Moon Bay.

Another fun surf in Half Moon Bay with NW swells hitting 20 seconds today... gotten quite big and towards the Mavericks we see giant white water splashing.

On these types of days, the currents do get very strong, and especially today there was a noticeable amount of outgoing rip currents plus a bit of help from the offshore winds.

It is a bit disconcerting today that before I know it I was way outside, especially outside of anyone else out there, and also if I am just focused on the horizon, and look back towards the shore it's way too small for my comfort.

2012.5: Dunes, Super Fun Day

5th/6th: Due to an emergency business trip to Seattle, no surfing. But issue resolved at the customer so that's great!

7th: Worked all day so no surfing. Though made some good progress.

2012.4: Back to Work, Back to A Short Local Session at the Jetty

Wed January 4th is my first "official" day of work. Being in a small start-up means I actually do not get to take a whole day off, but I try to make a point of doing.

A bit of a diversion here but I have known so many people who have transformed their lives "centered around" surfing. Some people decided to move to Santa Cruz where the waves are excellent year around. Some people move onto surf-school biz altogether to be able to surf every day and also finance surf camp trips to all around the world!

Wetsuit Review: The Hooded Front-Horizontal-Zipper Wetsuits Are The Warmest!

I have not been wearing a rear zipper wetsuit for the longest time. When I started to get to know Half Moon Bay local surfers several years ago, just about everyone was wearing the XCEL Infiniti suits back then.

Since then I have been through several suits, but never gone back to the rear zipper kind. All of my regular use suits from Xcel, Ripcurl and O'Neill are front "horizontal" zipper types.

Session 2012.3 Linda Mar to Cowells, Got What I Was Looking For

Note to readers. I visited three spots and did a QiK video from my phone, please feel free to watch them as you read this post.

The full winter swells are on. This often means direct W swells at 12 even 20 ft with the swell period of 15 or more seconds. Today the buoy was clocking something like 10 ft at 16-17 seconds at times.

Wetsuits Manufacturers - Stop Using Any Metal in Zippers!

If you have been following my posts, about two seasons or so ago, I bought two wetsuits about the same time. One is Ripcurl F-Bomb and another is O'Neill Mutant. Both are 3-4 mm configuration.

This summer when I was putting on the F-Bomb suit, the zipper "pull handle" part came off. The reason was quite simple, the handle part was made out of aluminum alloy type material, and over time the metal corroded and gave in. I have compared the closure construction on my O'Neill Mutant and all the zipper parts are made out of plastic, they are still "like new" condition.

Session 2012.2 Montara North

From the New Year's Eve I was able to make 3 consecutive days of surfing. These days, being able to do that is a treat as my job have been keeping me quite busy and I have been working straight since Christmas eve except for one day.

This morning the usual NW swells have weakened to the point that Montara which is usually too big (or too much of work-out) for me to paddle out, gave me some nice treat.

On the north end there were some focused peaks that were not too fast breaking for me and was able to catch quite a few waves... mostly fun lefts.

Session 2012.1 New Years Day

Happy New Year!

On 2011, I had to miss the chance to surf the New Years Day, but this new 2012, the weather was great and the condition was "doable" so we went out to our local Miramar spot to break the first wave.

The timing was not too great in the monring as the tide was really low and the break suffered from the usual close-outs, but I did get one "good ride." So it was a great success.

I also surfed the New Year's eve as well.

Update on Allergic Reactions To Red Tide

It has been said in various sources that swimming in the Red Tide is not harmful. However eating fishes or mollusks (clams and such) during the "summer" red tide season is often considered a health risk due to the accumulated toxins, and generally it is prohibited at least in California.

Non reaction is true for most swimmers or surfers but some people are (me included) allergic to this, and especially people will get respiratory reactions to this.

Surf Forecasting: Hawaii's Trade Winds

If you surf a lot, you know very well that the direction and the speed of the winds can contribute significantly to the quality of your surfing experience. If you surf “just about every day” then you know this well, and it is one of the things you would check before heading out or before deciding where you are going to go.

I am just back from Kauai and on this trip I was very much troubled by the winds. I admit that I do not know much in terms of Hawaii weather. I think I am better at understanding Baja or even Costa Rica situations than Hawaii after this trip.

Live Smart Surf Report Video

Watch My Smart Surf Reports! They are kind of smart because;

  • They are delivered live from Half Moon Bay.
  • I only report the poor surf conditions by video, so you known when it is bad, it is really going to be bad.
  • I do not contribute to the crowd. So everyone is happy.
  • It is a greener way to surf, as you prevent pollutions by saving unnecessary surf check trips to the coast, and saves you money too!
